Palos Hills police subdued an elderly man Friday afternoon who was waving a gun in the air, telling police he wanted to end his life.
Police responded to a call in the area of Theresa Circle and found a grey-haired male, 83, sitting in the grass at the rear of the building with a gun.
According to police, he yelled to police to shoot him or he will shoot them, saying he couldn’t do anything any more with his changing neighborhood and wanted to end his life.
Police officers were able to talk the man into putting down his weapon and gain his confidence, according to a police department news release. As they moved closer to him, one officer stepped on the weapon, while two other officers wrestled him away from the gun, police said.
He was transported to Palos Community Hospital.
Police Chief Paul Madigan commended his officers for their “compassionate” response.
“This could have gone horribly bad had it not been for some very good police work,” Madigan said in a news release.
