APPLETON — A 19-year-old New London man charged with stabbing two people during a brawl in the Town of Maple Creek waived his right to a preliminary hearing Tuesday in Outagamie County Court, acknowledging there's enough evidence against him for the case to go to trial.
Eric Doughty arrived at a party on Hintzke Road around 11 p.m. April 7 and was asked to leave with his friends after one of the men hit a woman.
But the group returned and a brawl ensued, during which Doughty stabbed one man three times in the back, thigh and buttocks, injuring his organs, according to the criminal complaint. The victim went to New London Family Medical Center and was transferred to Theda Clark Medical Center before he was released.
Another man who was trying to break up the fight was stabbed in the side during the tussle and went to St. Mary's Hospital Medical Center in Green Bay for treatment for the injury, which was not life threatening.
When police interviewed Doughty, he said he was involved in the fight and normally carries a knife. He said he had a knife in his hand during the brawl and might have hit someone with it.
One man who was with Doughty that night said Doughty told him after the fight, "Dude, I stabbed this kid like six times," and the knife "went in like butter," according to the complaint.
Doughty faces up to 58 years and nine months in prison and $145,000 in fines on charges including second-degree reckless injury, battery, bail jumping and endangering safety with a weapon. He is being held in the Outagamie County jail on a $25,000 cash bond. An arraignment is set for 1:30 p.m. May 3.
